What:

If you have never attended a Renaissance festival you are missing out!  There is so much to do and see.  Age of Chivalry is set up around the lake at Sunset park.  There are a couple different sections to check out and see while you are there like guilds, shows, shopping and food!

One side of the lake is where most of the guild encampments are set up.  Guild’s are themed costume groups who camp out at the fair and are part of the story line.  There is the royalty of the fair where the queen and king are set up, there are pirates and mermaids,  faeries and mythical creatures, belly dancers, the Wilds, the Vikings and even Romans.  They all have their own setups and some of them even let you into their encampments for interactive shows, fights, storytelling, show you the wares they make and sell and much more.

The second part of the grounds is where they set up all the vendors.   There are tons of vendors that sell everything from weapons, to costumes, to trinkets, to family genealogies.  The vendor area is situated right next to the food vendor area.  There are all sorts of delicious treats and drinks to partake in.  You can find massive turkey legs, funnel cakes, deep fried foods, Thai food, burgers, fries, kebabs, and the list goes on.  There are also alcoholic libations.

The next section of the fair is the stadium where all the fights and jousting matches take place.  You can sit and watch as the crazy people beat each other up and fight for the victory.  Throughout the fair grounds there are about 4 or 5 stages.  All the stages have different performances from bands, to jugglers, magicians, belly dancing, acting, storytelling and even some amazing animal shows.  Our very favorite show that we catch every year at the fair is Adam the Bawdy Juggler.  It is a bit raunchy in nature, hence the title of the show, but he is so talented and hysterical.  I definitely recommend catching his show.

A lot of people who are not part of the fair dress up to partake in the fun.  You can buy costume pieces at the fair, but that can be pretty pricey.  I suggest for a first time attendee to check out Savers and Goodwill and piece together a costume.  Ebay and Amazon also have some good pieces.  If your costume has a weapon involved it must be peace tied so you can not open it while inside.

Beginning last year, they offered a camping option.  We have never done that, but you pay for a spot where you can set up your own tent and basically stay at the fair all weekend.  We go every day and buy the weekend pass.  It is nice because you have a wristband that lets you go in and out of the fair.  If you buy a regular one day ticket, once you leave the fair you can’t go back in without paying to enter again.  The event is all ages, but it can get crazy at night time with all the people drinking.  All in all it’s a fun time for all ages.  You never know what you will see and experience.  Check it out at least once.

I will post some pictures of costumes from past fairs.  I realize I don’t have a lot of pictures of the fair itself but I will try to get some this year.
